Unlocking the Power of the Human-Animal Bond
March 20, 2024
Zoetis and the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) convened the EU Companion Animals Stakeholder Summit, igniting a crucial dialogue centered on advancing companion animal policy within the European Union. At the heart of this discussion was the unveiling of the groundbreaking Human-Animal Bond Report, a milestone document calling for a new era of collaboration to enhance human and animal health and wellbeing across Europe.
Policymakers, influencers, and industry experts converged at the summit with a call for action to elevate companion animal policies in the EU. Anchored by the insights of the Human-Animal Bond Report, which marks the first comprehensive exploration of its kind, stakeholders underscored the imperative to reevaluate existing policies to champion the myriad benefits of the human-animal bond.
Empowering Communities Through the Human-Animal Bond
The Human-Animal Bond Report serves as a call to recognize and amplify the profound impact of pets and companion animals on societal wellbeing. Despite the long-established presence of pets in human culture and the compelling evidence supporting their positive influence on physical and mental health, EU policies have yet to fully embrace and harness this transformative bond.
Danny Holmes, President of FECAVA, emphasized the pivotal role of animals in social care, citing poignant examples of their significance, including their presence in war zones as symbols of humanity. FECAVA advocates for comprehensive animal welfare legislation to facilitate broader access to the benefits of the human-animal bond, irrespective of social status or disability.
Breaking Down Barriers to Pet Ownership
The Human-Animal Bond Report sheds light on the obstacles hindering equitable pet ownership, such as the financial burden of veterinary care and the scarcity of pet-friendly accommodations. 72% of rental housing residents report difficulties in finding pet-friendly housing, exacerbating disparities in access to the human-animal bond.
Member of European Parliament, Marina Kaljurand, highlighted the multifaceted barriers to pet ownership and underscored the need for concerted efforts to dismantle them. Recognizing the untapped potential of the human-animal health relationship, Kaljurand expressed optimism that heightened awareness would pave the way for inclusive policies.
Charting a Path Forward
Against the backdrop of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing and the EU’s Mental Health Strategy, stakeholders at the summit championed a proactive agenda to leverage the human-animal bond for the betterment of EU citizens. Jamie Brannan, Executive Vice President and Group President at Zoetis, underscored the imperative of collaborative action to maximize the benefits of the bond on health and wellbeing.
Brannan outlined key initiatives to bolster veterinary care accessibility, ensure pet-friendly environments, and promote community engagement. By nurturing the human-animal bond, these initiatives not only enhance animal welfare but also foster a more resilient and compassionate society.
Embracing a Brighter Future
With the Human-Animal Bond Report illuminating the path forward, Zoetis, FECAVA, and their partners stand poised to champion policies that honor the timeless bond between humans and animals. Together we are working towards a future where the transformative power of this bond transcends barriers, enriching the lives of all who embrace it.
